Imagine FX

I submitted my art to Imagine FX in 2010. Here’s what happened.

I was in “Imagine FX” magazine in 2010 but I never really told anyone about it. I haven't posted any of my anime-inspired work but below is a scan from the magazine. This magazine showcases talented work from all over the world and I really wanted to be published in it.

I submitted my images via email and never thought my work would even be looked at. This magazine receives thousands of submissions, so this was a long shot, but after a few weeks of not hearing anything back, I figured my submission was rejected and I moved on from it.

…but something finally happened

After a few months, I received an email on Facebook from a student attending the University of Beirut. He said he liked my work in the magazine and wanted to know more about my illustration process.

I was shocked to get the message since I never received a notice from the magazine that my submission was accepted. I asked this person to find out which issue I was in.

My art was in the April 2010 Issue. I called a few Barnes & Noble bookstores here in NYC to see if they were carrying the issue but it turned out that this issue wasn't being carried here in the U.S. anymore.

It was a back issue and needed to be ordered from the U.K.

I was going crazy

After some more hunting, I finally found the issue on eBay. The image below shows the cover of the magazine as well as the page my artwork appears on.

The Tag Alongs

An anime girl with her two friends, a bird, and a cat; the “Tag Alongs”. I originally made postcards with this image to sell in the dealer room when I attended Otakon as an artist.

Sketched with pencil and paper, photoshop, illustrator, and 3DS Max.

Wizards

1977

One of my Imagine FX submissions was a re-envisioning of “Necron 99”, a character from the 1970s animated movie “Wizards” by animator Ralph Bakshi.

I always thought it was a great-looking character. Below are the original illustrations of Necron 99 along with my re-imagining of him.

Wizards Trailer

My version

I might go back and rework this image at some point, but for now, here is the original pencil sketch, the finished character-only rendering, and the final completed piece with a post-apocalyptic background that was sent to Imagine FX for submission.

Sketched with pencil and paper, photoshop, and illustrator.

Below is the updated version. I still have more work to do on it.

Thanks for looking.
